Fleming published fourteen books over thirteen years — but the missions inside them don’t always happen in that order. Toggle between how you’d read them and how they actually unfold in Bond’s life.
For the first seven novels, publication order and story chronology are identical. After that, two short-story collections break the pattern. The five stories collected in For Your Eyes Only (1960) are printed in one order but, on the internal evidence, happen in a different one — and all five take place before Thunderball, despite being published after it. The same happens again with Octopussy and The Living Daylights, published last of all fourteen books in 1966, whose four stories are dated 1960–61 and so occur before On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me and You Only Live Twice, not after. Fleming himself was famously vague on exact dates; the chronology here follows the widely cited reconstruction by Bond scholar John Griswold, cross-checked against other sources, rather than anything Fleming stated outright.
