Fleming’s Bond is only ever as interesting as the villain across the table from him, and across his fourteen books that meant far more variety than one recurring nemesis. This index gathers 25 significant antagonists from the original novels and short stories — masterminds, hired killers, double agents and the handlers who run them — noting which organisation stands behind each one, from SPECTRE and SMERSH down to men working for nothing more ideological than a fee, and how, or whether, Fleming lets them survive the book they’re in. Only one villain makes it across more than a single story: Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who goes from an unseen voice on the telephone in Thunderball to the man Bond finally kills with his bare hands in a Japanese poison garden three books later — with his lieutenant, Irma Bunt, the only other figure in the index to return for a second appearance.
